This one is for David's Flamigos
Today we decided to go to a glacier. It really didn't occur to me how high one needed to climb to get to a glacier in August.... We went up and up and up! We had climbed to 10,000 feet with the help of some gondolas and gandolettes (the name we gave to small gandolas). These rides were terrifying, something we wouldn't have done on our own. Finally we climbed to these chairlifts that took us to the glacier. The chair lifts are completely open and scary on their own, these chairlifts went over deep crevices in a glacier many feet below. Bob and I had decided not to continue. David told us about a time he went to Morocco and road around on a bike, he saw some red flamingo's across a lake and had wanted to see them but decided they were too far after his long ride... he went back a couple years later to see these flamingos and the lake had dried up and the birds were gone. We decided with global warming, by the time we got back this glacier would also be gone... so we went on the scary chair lift. I cannot remember being more scared, it was the scariest ride I had ever been one! We went over to the glacier it was awesome to see the fresh erosion and they even had sleds to slide down a bit. It was fantastic! We had a very memorable time. We of course got a beer to start our trek down. We also went into a glacier cave and Bob took some awesome photos in the cave, I have attached one.
We took the gondolas part way and climbed down the rest of the way.... we stopped for another beer along the way... At the bottom, it was quite late for a Swiss Sunday. There was nothing open. I really had to go make a pit stop.... luckliy there had been a BMW club get together at the bottom of the mountain and they had rented port-a-potties. I ran to it and found it to be very nice. the toilet flushed... you could pump running water to wash your hands... I love BMW and their car clubs. We are having a late dinner and an early morning. We have a 7:30 train to Lugano to visit the Italian side of Switzerland. We will be traveling by ourselves so that should be interesting!

Very impressed with the chair lift. I don't like them normally let alone crossing crevices. The photo is awesome.
